May 2012Terry Bailey

Terry had no formal art training, but has always been interested in art as an observer. It was only since retiring, nearly 7 years ago now, that he developed an interest in “doing” art.

In 2005 he joined a U3A pencil drawing class on Bribie, and was captivated with creativity of putting lines on paper. However, since meeting the working-together pastel group at the Bribie Island Community Arts Centre, Pastel has become his main medium.

He finds pastels an expressive medium, allowing freedom to develop a subject at his own pace; using large broad stokes or fine blended detail. The results are always very rewarding.

Terry BaileyHe prefers to undertake large works as they allow more freedom of expression and seem to develop a character of their own.

Terry also runs a class for advanced drawing at the Bribie U3A, and teaches pencil drawing at the Crafty Shed at Ningi.

The main focus of these classes has become portraits, Terry Baileyusing the blending or smudging technique. The process is similar to pastel blending, and is an extremely expressive way of applying pencil to paper and the results can be quite stunning.

Terry has found teaching is a very rewarding experience, and believes it has greatly improved his own ability as an artist.
