THE UKE DUKES
The Uke Dukes are a trio of “mature” age blokes who love playing the ukulele. In fact they love it so much that they want to share their love by teaching others to play this instrument as well.
The ‘Banksias to Beach’ Arts Festival to be held in July is providing a venue for these three keen blokes to run a couple of workshops so that anyone can join in for a day or two to learn all about playing a ukulele. Included in the workshop fee is a Ukulele Kit for you to use and keep. How good is that!
For those who are not too familiar with the origins of this instrument, here is a short history.
The ukulele is a small 4-stringed guitar of Portuguese origin which became popular in Hawaii and subsequently in the U.S and Europe.
The word Ukulele is Hawaiian for ‘jumping flea’!
The Trio was formed in 2008 with the express purpose of promoting the enjoyment of music and to encourage the playing of ukuleles for all age groups.
So if you think this would be a fun thing to experience and learn go to the website www.bribieartcentre.com.au and click on Festival then ‘workshops’
or phone: 07 3408 9288 for more information, Tuesday to Sunday 10am to 4pm.

Amazing MosAicS

After attending a Mosaics workshop sometime ago a small band of people decided to start a Working Together group at the Bribie Community Arts Centre to learn how to create their own mosaics for themselves.

It is now a couple of years down the track and with help and support from a couple of members, with more experience, they have produced many delightful designs. These include house numbers, bathroom designs, decorated tiling for the garden, bird baths, wall hangings, mirror surrounds, and many other colourful items. The ideas are endless.
Next time you visit the Bribie Community Arts Centre take a moment to view the Mosaic creation on the outside wall near the entrance door to the Art Centre. This was commissioned by the Art Centre President, Liz Heber, for the first ‘Banksias to Beach’ Arts Festival in 2010. It was a proud moment for the small group when their first combined project was mounted on the wall for the whole world to enjoy.
If this interesting hobby appeals to you why not enquire at the Reception Desk for further details. New members will always be made welcome.
