Born in Melbourne, Australia, after completing a science degree she studied ceramics at East Sydney Technical College and is now head of the Ceramic Workshop at the Australian National University in Canberra. She is interested in the manufacture of domestic ceramic items and has run her own production pottery, Brindabella Pottery, for over twenty years. |
Using fine porcelain, Janet creates intriguing works of grouped vessels that make reference to the domestic tradition and explore the ideas of manual skill in craft practice. She has a long career in teaching and is currently Head of Ceramics at the National Art School, Sydney, Australia.
She has published a number of books on ceramics and glazes, has worked on collaborative projects with industry, and has lectured and conducted workshops internationally including Australia, North America and China including demonstrating wheel throwing techniques at the 2005 International Ceramics Festival, Aberystwyth.

Janet will be holding one workshop during the festival. This is detailed below.
WORKSHOP: Wheel as Tool - Throwing is only the Beginning - Demonstration (Code JD1)
DESCRIPTION:
Generally we become so focused on actually throwing pots we often forget that there are many more ways of making interesting work than a single act of throwing. This workshop will look at ways of using simple quickly- thrown forms combined with hand building techniques to develop new works. If you can throw a simple bowl and a (more or less) cylindrical shape- then this workshop is for you.
This will be a demonstration workshop.
TIME AND PLACE: July 16 (1 day), 8.30am to 4pm, Studio 2, Community Arts Centre.
WORKSHOP FEE: $25
