
John is a Faceting Teacher with more than 30 years experience. He is a qualified Geologist/Mineralogist and teacher with 40 years experience as a teacher and University Lecturer.
John has taught Geology, Mineralogy and Gemmology at QUT, and designed and delivered Faceting Courses for TAFE Adult Education.
His interest in faceting began when he was 15 as a result of many fossicking trips to Rubyvale and he began faceting using a machine made by his late father. John became seriously interested in faceting again in 1980 and joined the Australian Facetors’ Guild (AFG) in 1982 and has held many Board positions in that organisation. He is currently the Education Officer of the AFG and Editor of the bimonthly Journal Facet Talk.
John is also the convenor of the annual AFG Seminars and conducts Certificate Faceting Courses for the Queensland Sapphire Producers’ Association and the Australian Facetors’ Guild Ltd. John and the late Peter Collins co-authored a well received book to teach the essentials of faceting – Cutting Gemstones – A Beginners Guide to Faceting.
John will be holding one workshop during the festival.

Faceting techniques – “Preforming rather than Performing! Make your Act more Polished!” Specific cuts and demonstrations e.g. Cushion, Chevron, fast cutting techniques. Other subjects to discuss are Basic Gemmology for Facetors, Photo faceted Gems, using GemCad to modify redesign cuts.
